General Info
Calliandra means beautiful stamens, referring to the conspicuous silky stamens of the mimosa-like flower inflorescence.
Botanical Features
Form: Small tree or big shrub, 1.8-5.0 m tall.
Leaf: Compound, with paired, kidney-shaped leaflets.
Flower: Globular dense powderpuff, with numerous filamentous, red or deep pink stamens. They attract and provide nectar for bees and hummingbirds. Free- flowering.
Fruit: Brown flattened seedpods, splitting and curling up explosively when ripe to disperse seeds.
Trunk: Attractively crooked.
Point of Interest
Can be trained as a small standard tree, or grown as a bushy and rounded shrub. Often assumes sprawling form in full sun, but is more upright in partial shade. Responds well to being root- bound . Propagation is by seeds(which is easier) or stem cuttings.
Suitable for limited spaces like small gardens, narrow verges and in containers .
Ideal as a colourful hedge for screening .
