General Info
A small to medium-sized tree, 3-10 m tall, and 30-50 cm in diameter . The tree bears fruit after 3-7 years upon seed germination, and clonal trees fruit in 3-5 years.
Botanical Features
Form: Irregular and open crown.
Leaf: The leaves are in opposite arrangement, and are on short and thick petioles.
Flower: The yellowish-white or pinkish flowers are lightly aromatic, and borne in loose terminal or axillary clusters of 3-7 flowers which are usually covered by its own foliage.
Fruit: The skin of the Jambu Ayer fruit is thin, glossy, and its colour varies from white to light red to red.
Trunk: The trunk is short and crooked,and branches near the ground.
Points of Interest
The Jambu Ayer fruit is usually consumed fresh and can be eaten to relieve thirst. After harvest, it should be consumed or preserved after a few days, otherwise it will rot.
In Malaysia, a salad consisting of Jambu Ayer fruit is served at the ceremony after childbirth in the past.
The Jambu Ayer wood is hard, and is used to make handicrafts.
